RandSwitch Cars (part of RandSwitch) helps South Africans who are curious about swapping a petrol car for a plug-in hybrid, hybrid or EV, including when keeping your current car is the better deal. Rand first, plain language, sources linked.

Where the numbers come from

• Prices and specs: recommended retail prices from cars.co.za, gwm.co.za, timeslive.co.za, checked on 17 Oct 2026. Each price links to its page. Always confirm with the brand's official South African website.
• Petrol: 95 unleaded inland R30.25/L from 07 Oct 2026 (gov.za).
• Home-charger offers: official South African brand websites, offer pages and press releases only.

Running costs

Monthly cost = electricity (kWh/100km × km × share on electricity × 1.1 for charging losses × R/kWh) + petrol (L/100km × km × share on petrol × R/L). Where a brand doesn't publish kWh/100km we divide the claimed battery size by the claimed electric range. For plug-in hybrids with an empty battery we use the published figure, or 6 L/100km as our estimate when none is published. Claimed figures are usually better than real life.

Privacy

One privacy policy covers all RandSwitch sites: randswitch.com/privacy. In short: the switch tool doesn't store what you enter, we don't set a location cookie, and we only keep your email if you sign up for emails. To have your data corrected or deleted, email hello@randswitch.com.

What we do and don't do

RandSwitch Cars is free, independent information for individuals: prices, specs and running costs. We don't sell, list or value cars, we're not a marketplace, we don't pass anyone's details to dealers, and we take no money from car dealers, car finance or car insurance companies.
